I have a long standing interest in the physiological mechanisms that underlie the development of hypertension (high blood pressure). Hypertension afflicts approximately 30% of the population (including several members of my family). Hypertension is also a major risk factor for the development of other diseases such as renal failure, heart failure, atherosclerosis, stroke, coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction. Moreover, as of 2015 the American Heart Association reports that hypertension continues to increase in prevalence. Despite the significant health impact of hypertension, little is known about the mechanisms that trigger the development of high blood pressure. Accordingly, better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the development of high blood pressure should foster new therapeutic approaches to prevent and treat this disease.
