Addiction Counseling & Prevention (M.A.)

Master's
  Online

This master's program can be completed in as little as 33 credit hours, or as many as 45, depending on your current certification and academic background. This program will prepare you to achieve an advanced level of competency in addressing current and future addiction, co-occurring and prevention challenges in society. You will graduate eligible for the highest level of addiction and prevention credentialing in South Dakota. Individuals outside the state of South Dakota should contact their state chemical dependency certification board to ensure courses meet their requirements which may differ by state.

Addiction Counseling & Prevention: Co-Occurring (M.A.)

Master's
  Online

This master's program with co-occurring specialization requires 45 credit hours (standard track only) and will prepare you to better treat the needs of individuals with both substance use disorders and mental health disorders. Through advanced coursework in psychopathology, addiction and relapse prevention you will be able to identify clients with co-occurring disorders.

Addiction Counseling & Prevention

Certificate
  Online

Through this certificate program, you will gain the training needed to meet the increasingly complex needs of clients. Completion of this program prepares professionals to meet 15 of the 21 specialized academic credit hours required for South Dakota state credentialing. This program may or may not lead to licensure in other states; USD cannot confirm whether the course or program meets requirements in the state in which the student resides. Individuals outside the state of South Dakota should contact their state chemical dependency certification board to ensure courses meet their requirements.

Teaching and research assistantships are awarded by individual departments. If you do not receive an assistantship within your department, you are eligible for an assistantship outside of your academic program or within support offices (non-academic units) at USD. Real-World Opportunities

The Addiction Counseling and Prevention Department at the School of Health Sciences at USD has provided internship opportunities for several decades. In 1973 most of our students were already working in the addiction or prevention profession and were taking additional coursework to earn certification in South Dakota. Over the years the program grew to encompass both undergraduate and graduate level programs. Students who did not currently work in the addiction and prevention field began enrolling in the programs. In the fall of 2009, the internship experience became a requirement of the program so students could gain the real-world experience they needed to succeed.

The program not only allows student internship opportunities in South Dakota, but nationally and internationally.  Internships have been completed in New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, and Germany.  The internship provides students with the opportunity to use all the knowledge they have learned from their courses work on real clients. The majority of our student obtain job opportunities through their internship experience.  

At USD, our graduate students are actively pursuing unique research and presenting at local and national conferences exploring innovative areas of interest to them. Additional research and grant opportunities include:

Each semester students may apply for grants through the USD Graduate School, faculty and students pursue research in virtually all academic departments on campus, and in many cases, it is a required portion of a graduate degree program.
