Pine Startup Screen

This is a tutorial on how to use Pine for E-mail. This tutorial uses the MOUSE, but remember the actual commands in Pine must be entered from the keyboard. I would recommend going through each of main menu items step-by-step by clicking on the right arrow above. You will need to go through each section to make sure you complete all of the assignments.

The screen below is a fairly accurate representation of what Pine looks like.

     C    COMPOSE MESSAGE   -  Compose and send/post a message

     I    FOLDER INDEX      -  View messages in current folder

     L    FOLDER LIST       -  Select a folder OR news group to view

     A    ADDRESS BOOK      -  Update address book

     S    SETUP             -  Configure or update Pine

     Q    QUIT              -  Exit the Pine program

• A status line displays where you are in the program and can be found on the top line of all Pine screens (In the example above -- MAIN MENU).
• The Main Menu Commands are displayed in the body of the screen. To issue any of these commands from Pine, you just type the letter associated with the command. You do NOT have to press return after the letter (above -- ? C I L A S Q).
• The bottom two lines of the screen almost always have a short MENU of commands available. These are SCREEN COMMANDS that are defined for each screen and are not the same throughout the program. There is a short explanation of the main menu screen commands in a table at the end of this page (above -- ? P R O L N K).
