The Lifetime Achievement Award presented to the Lloyd Family

For the first time in PFBA’s 31 year history, the association presented a Lifetime Achievement Award. This Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a family who has made significant and meaningful contributions to PFBA and to the members of the association.

Craig and Pat Lloyd, founders of Lloyd Companies, were presented with this award because of their significant contributions to family businesses and to PFBA throughout their lifetime. Second generation of Lloyd Companies includes sisters Liz Lloyd, Christie Ernst, Mary Lloyd-Huber and their cousin, Chris Thorkelson. Family leadership includes Craig Lloyd, board chair, Chris Thorkelson, president and CEO, Christie Ernst executive vice president of property management.

The Lloyd All In Award presented to VIKOR Teleconstruction

In Craig and Pat Lloyd’s honor, The Lloyd All In Award was created this year. This goes to a family who leans all into their family business and to PFBA, just as the Lloyd Family has done. The All In recipient is willing to learn through PFBA programs, through connecting with fellow families and for their willingness to show up and invest in their family and their business.

The inaugural Lloyd All In Award is presented to Craig and Kristin Snyder of VIKOR Teleconstruction in Sioux Falls. Since joining PFBA less than a year ago, the Snyder Family has gone "all in." They attended the Next Gen Retreat and Board Bootcamp, have joined affinity peer groups and are investing time into the family aspect of their business and their lives. Craig and Kristin’s four children are involved in the business as well as Craig’s sister. VIKOR family leadership includes Craig Snyder, founder & CEO, Jonah Snyder, vice president of pperations, Emily Kennington, chief administrative officer, Gabe Messler, director of business intelligence & analytics and Ammon Snyder, director of fleet & asset manager.

The Heritage Award presented to the Hopkins Family of CorTrust Bank

Our purpose at PFBA is to help family businesses thrive through generations. By living out our purpose, each year we present the Heritage Award to a business that is 75 years old or older.

This year’s Heritage Award is presented to the Hopkins Family of CorTrust Bank. CorTrust was founded in 1930, and ownership and leadership includes second generation Boyd and Dody Hopkins. Third generation includes Jack Hopkins, president and CEO, and Todd Hopkins, CorTrust mortgage president – both based in Sioux Falls. Fourth generation leadership includes McKinzie Hopkins, senior vice president, who is based in the Twin Cities.

The Vicki Clarke Award presented to the Steffes Family of Dickinson, North Dakota

The late Vicki Clarke was part of the County Fair Foods family business headquartered in Mitchell, South Dakota. Clarke made a lasting impression on many, especially those within her own family business. The Vicki Clarke Award recognizes a family business that also makes a lasting impression on others through valuable contributions to their community, investing in the well-being of their employees, pride of their business, and proven success and growth of the business.

This year’s Vicki Clarke Award is presented to Steffes, a lean-operating original equipment manufacturer, located in Dickinson, North Dakota. The Steffes Family includes co-founders and second generation Paul and Laurie Steffes. Third generation owners include Suzi Sobolik, Kyle Steffes and Katie Harrington.

The 31st Annual Family Business Conference was held in Sioux Falls on April 27 and 28. More than 300 people from 17 states and two countries attended the conference in person, and an additional 200 people attended the conference virtually. The 32nd Annual Family Business Conference is scheduled for April 17-18, 2024 in Sioux Falls.

The Prairie Family Business Association (PFBA), founded in 1992, is an outreach center of the University of South Dakota Beacom School of Business. PFBA helps family businesses thrive through generations by providing a resource network for family business success. The Association serves more than 230 members of businesses throughout the region and nation.
