"We are so excited to return to the main stage after having been away for two years due to the pandemic,” Tracelyn Gesteland, D.M.A., USD professor of music said. “The singers and orchestra are sounding amazing in rehearsal, and the cast is having a great time with Handel’s rather unique and appealing blend of drama and comedy, the modern equivalent to a dramedy.”

"Alcina centers on a malicious sorceress who uses her magic to make men fall in love with her and turns them into wild animals when she tires of them. Alcina has captured the knight Ruggiero, whose fiancée, Bradamante, embarks on a rescue mission to save her love, setting the stage for a climactic showdown.

The performance is presented by USD’s award-winning Opera program and accompanied by the USD Opera Orchestra. Gesteland directs the production, while Luis Viquez, D.M.A., conducts.

“The USD Opera has been nationally recognized by The American Prize or the National Opera Association every year since 2011 and based on the quality of this cast’s work so far, along with their dedication to the production, I predict that this year will be no different,” Gesteland said.
