"Every year USD Theatre brings an amazing variety of plays to life on our stage, but this year is looking to be extra special," said Raimondo Genna, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Theatre and associate professor. "Along with our regular season of fantastic shows, we are especially excited to host the legendary Spiderwoman Theater and their beautiful and thought-provoking 'Misdemeanor Dream.' We are so thrilled to bring all these wonderful pieces to our USD campus family and our community at large."

USD Theatre starts off the season in September with William Shakespeare’s classic comedy, "As You Like It," on the Knutson stage. "As You Like It" runs from Sept. 28-Oct. 1.

In October, the Arena theatre will house a play by Lauren Gunderson, another one of the most produced playwrights on U.S. stages in recent years. Her play, "Ada and the Engine," centers on women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and is sure to be an inspiration. "Ada and the Engine" runs Oct. 19-22.

The department rounds out the fall semester in November with "Ride the Cyclone," a student-chosen musical about life, death and the mysterious space in between. "Ride the Cyclone" runs Nov. 17-19 and Nov. 30  Dec. 3.

March 22-24, 2024, students will again produce the Ron L. Moyer One-Act Plays – a well-loved staple of the USD Theatre season.

April’s production is "Bat Boy: The Musical." Based on a story in The Weekly World News, "Bat Boy" is a rock musical with echoes of "Edward Scissorhands." "Bat Boy: The Musical" runs April 18-21, 2024.

In addition to departmental productions, the Department of Theatre is proud to host the nationally acclaimed Spiderwoman Theater in February 2024 for a week-long residency with the USD community. The theater will bring its unique style of theater training and education rooted in an urban Indigenous performance practice from New York City to Vermillion. Spiderwoman Theater will also present its touring show, "Misdemeanor Dream" – a celebration of Indigenous storytelling, bringing together a multigenerational ensemble of performers, installation artists and knowledge keepers from Native and First Nations communities across the U.S. and Canada.
