The Cutler Award was established through a generous gift from the Cutler family of Cutler Law Firm. The award recognizes the work the USD law school’s faculty does, both in and out of the classroom, to further the legal profession and the success of future lawyer leaders.

“The inspiration for the award came from the firm’s founding partner, Richard A. Cutler,” said Cutler Law Firm. “Rich saw the importance of enabling the Knudson School of Law to attract and retain talented faculty and asked the firm to establish a similar award for its faculty. The Cutler Award for Excellence in Legal Education allows the faculty to select the deserving recipient among their peers and reward them for going above and beyond what is expected. The firm is proud to see their investment in Legal Education reflected in the outstanding students and graduates they recruit each year.”

Schmidt is from Lincoln, Nebraska, where he maintains a counsel position with Baylor Evenen Wolfe & Tannehill LLP. He spent eight years as a full-time attorney at BEWT prior to accepting a teaching position at the Knudson School of Law.

Schmidt teaches Employment Discrimination, Discovery Practice, State and Local Government and Civil Procedure. For him, teaching is more of a calling than a job.

“I was drawn to USD Law in large part because of its unique and powerful role in serving the state of South Dakota by promoting the development of our legal system through scholarship and helping cultivate the next generations of those who practice it through teaching,” said Schmidt. “I’m honored to receive this award and appreciative of the generous support from the Cutler family.”

Schmidt’s most recent scholarship was published in the Arkansas Law Review and can be accessed through USD RED.
