The Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences has announced its new name as the Division of Biomedical and Translational Sciences.

This change, which was approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents in December 2024, reflects the division’s dedication to advancing biomedical knowledge and applying it to medical practice.

William Mayhan, Ph.D., dean of the Division of Biomedical and Translational Sciences explained that the new name is a more accurate reflection of the intensive research taking place within the division.

Our investigators and academic faculty are involved in cutting-edge research and innovative teaching. We can apply our findings to many disease processes that affect the people of South Dakota and worldwide, said Mayhan.

Mayhan says the name change also encompasses the innovative teaching methodologies that are delivered to undergraduate, graduate, health sciences and medical students.

Our research and teachings are translational,” said Mayhan. “We are using new and innovative teaching modalities and are applying lessons of biomedical sciences to the treatment of patients.”
