USD Medical Students Learn Post-Graduate Destinations at Match Day 2026
Match Day is known in the medical education community as the day on which the National Resident Matching Program releases the results of all the applicants who have applied for residency training positions in the United States.
Following graduation in May, the 71 new physicians emerging from the USD Sanford School of Medicine will move on to the next stage of their training at clinics, hospitals and health care facilities across the nation.
Destinations for USD medical students include 23 states, working in 18 different specialties. South Dakota will keep 22 USD medical school graduates in the state. The most popular residency among the Class of 2026 is family medicine, with 16 graduates pursuing training in that area. Ten will receive training in internal medicine; five each in pediatrics and psychiatry; and four each in anesthesiology, dermatology, emergency medicine, general surgery and neurology and three matched in OB/GYN and urology.
Nationally, a record-high 53,373 applicants registered in the 2026 Main Residency Match from all U.S. medical schools and some international medical schools, filling 41,482 residency positions.
