The program aims to display thought-provoking art pieces in the Mary Nettleman, M.D., Classroom, a large classroom located in the library that was dedicated in February 2021.

The goal of the Resident Artist Series is to promote the visual arts as one path toward nurturing understanding, empathy and kindness among the upcoming generation of physicians and other health care providers. Another goal is to engage the greater Sioux Falls public in dialogues about health and well-being and the differences that foster understanding and community.

Amy Fill, USD gallery director, was named the first Artist in Residence in the fall of 2024. Fill installed her piece in the Nettleman Classroom, a continuation of her Exquisite Cloud project entitled Murmur(ation). The work connects with the history of the surrealist’s drawing game, Exquisite Corpse. This game is a collaborative, improvisational and playful approach to creative exploration and flow.

The piece also uses the cloud as a metaphor for observation and participation without judgment. It encourages the practice of observing “passing thoughts” and reinforces the universal truth of impermanence within beauty and nature, along with the interconnectedness of life and death.

The Wegner Library will host a reception for Fill’s work at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 14, in the Nettleman Classroom.

The reception is open to the public and the USD community. It will include light hors d’oeuvres and an artist talk from Fill. Opportunities for multidimensional interaction with art will also be available.
