Dr. Kupershmidt, an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences, first joined USD in November 2015. She serves as chair of Interprofessional Health Education Center (IHEC) and is the ECHO coordinator for the SHS.
Dr. Kupershmidt’s teaching and mentoring responsibilities are defined by her role as the IHEC chair. As such, she directs efforts to integrate IPE curricular requirements, IPE scholarship, student learning activities and faculty development. This includes the planning and coordination of campus-wide IPE Research and Practice activities involving students, faculty, and community partners. In the PhD in HSC program, where she focuses on innovations in online graduate research, she has taught an Independent Study class (HSC 591), Seminar 3 (HSC 890), and Grantwriting and Grantsmanship (HSC 791). At the undergraduate level, in the HSC program she teaches Patient Safety & Quality Improvement (HSC450) and Introduction to Research (HSC 111). She integrates principles of “Action Research”, a transformative science that combines research and practice by coordinating learning activities (action) with knowledge and personal reflexivity. Her teaching interests are closely interwoven research and service having integrated undergraduate, graduate and professional students in and the SHS.
Dr Kupershmidt's primary research focus is the definition and evaluation of alternative and complementary processes or methods that foster integrative community engagement in disease prevention and wellness behaviors through interprofessional teamwork. Within this broader context, she is working on defining processes that provide access to Advance Care Planning and palliative care in rural environments, as well as finding ways to standardize and evaluate the effects of alternative health care interventions. Her research relies on the principles of Participatory Action Research, which is multi-dimensional and practical, coordinating action and understanding with personal reflexivity.
