Kathy LaPlante is a member of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Oklahoma. She currently teaches in the Master of Social Work program at the University of South Dakota in the areas of Child Welfare, Social Work Practice with Native American Populations, Diversity and Social Justice in Rural and Urban Communities, Advanced Social Policy and Human Behavior in the Social Environment. In recent years, Kathy contributed to an edited book chapter for the APA on the disproportionality of Native American children in the child welfare system drawing from her work in teaching and public child welfare. Kathy serves as the Program Coordinator for Native Students in Health Sciences where she is working collaboratively to develop a sustainable Native American Health Science program.
