Beginning at 8:30 a.m., posters and presentations documenting Missouri River research will be offered inside the Al Neuharth Media Center. Persons interested in Missouri River issues are encouraged to join researchers from the University and federal, state and local organizations for discussion of the science, history and policy of the Missouri River. Organizations contributing to the symposium include the National Park Service; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks; Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and the City of Yankton.

Researchers from USD, South Dakota State University and Virginia Tech will present their research through half-hour lectures beginning with USD graduate student Aaron Gregor at 9 a.m. Additional presenters from The U include Robert Schneiders, Ph.D., assistant professor of agricultural history and rural studies, who will discuss the Cultural History of the Garrison Dam Project; Mark Dixon, Ph.D., an assistant professor of biology, will present “Assessment of Historic Land Cover Change and Current Forest Area along the Missouri National Recreational River;” and Tim Cowman, director of the Missouri River Institute at USD, is scheduled to talk about the monitoring plan for the Gunderson Backwater Project. All presentations are free and open to the public, including the evening’s keynote address, “Impacts of Regional Climate Change on the Missouri River” by Dennis Todey, a climatologist with the State of South Dakota, at 7 p.m in Farber Hall.
