2009 Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute at The U cancelled
"Given the economic impact on our endowments in the College of Fine Arts, it was not possible to offer a summer program at the level and quality we feel is appropriate for these students," Guyette said. "The College of Fine Arts is fully committed to hosting the Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute in the summer of 2010 with a fresh face and fresh ideas."
This one-year hiatus will allow for additional fundraising opportunities and planning. Preparations will begin soon for hosting next year's event, which is scheduled for June 13-25, 2010.
The Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute has been a crucial aspect of The U’s summer art camp program since 1991. For almost two decades, over a two-week period, Native American youth from across the Northern Plains attend an expense-free art camp with unlimited access to supplies at the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. The camp, in honor of Oscar Howe’s legacy at The University of South Dakota, is one of many important Native American events that recognize the educational service Howe provided during his career at USD from 1957 until his retirement in 1980.
