Education Major Cowan Wins Mrs Schaefers Scholarship
“I decided to pursue a career in education because I wanted to make a difference in students' lives,” said Cowan. “I want to make learning fun so that students enjoy coming to school.”
Cowan credited the USD School of Education for preparing her to succeed in her future career as a teacher. “There are so many aspects that I love about the School of Education. The staff is amazing,” said Cowan. “I also love that we have a year-long student teaching experience. You get to see what a full school year is like and you get to know the students better. “
The Mrs. Schaefer's Scholarship honors the life of longtime South Dakota educator Gloria Schaefer. Known as "Mrs. Schaefer" to hundreds of students, her family now supports her legacy by providing an annual $1,000 scholarship award to a South Dakota junior or senior collegiate student who exemplifies Schaefer's energy and selfless dedication to others. Though academic success is considered, the nominee must demonstrate drive and integrity. Most importantly, the candidate should be known for humble appreciation of family, friends and strangers.
