High school students entering 10th through the 12th grades this fall are eligible to attend the weeklong camp and participate in a variety of hands-on learning and information-gathering activities. Additionally, camp participants will be able to interact with health care professionals and faculty members. Staff advisers from the Sanford School of Medicine and the USD School of Health Sciences will be available during the week to discuss everything from education requirements to future employment opportunities and salaries.

Highlights include tours of Sanford Medical Centers in Vermillion and Sioux Falls, a tour of the new Sanford Research facilities and a tour of Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls. During the week, students will also have an opportunity to observe medical demonstrations, participate in a tour of the gross anatomy lab and attend presentations by area health professionals. Sponsors for the 2011 Healthcare Careers Summer Camp are the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota, the USD School of Health Sciences, Sanford Health and the Dakota Hospital Foundation.

The U’s Healthcare Careers Summer Camp is open to students from South Dakota, northeast Nebraska, northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. Tuition is $50 per student. Meals, lodging, and all educational and recreational activities are provided. All applications require a counselor nomination, a parent or guardian signature, an official school transcript and a personal statement. Application deadline is Saturday, April 30.
