John Dudley Named College of Arts & Sciences Dean
Dudley came to USD in 2003 as an assistant professor of English. His administrative and service roles at USD include coordinator of graduate studies in the Department of English, chair of the Department of English and interim chair of the Department of Anthropology & Sociology. He was promoted to professor of English in 2015 and served as the associate dean for academics in the College of Arts & Sciences from 2014 to 2021.
“In his past roles and as interim dean, Dr. Dudley has proven he is an effective, thoughtful and accomplished leader in the College of Arts & Sciences,” said USD President Sheila K. Gestring. “We are fortunate to have Dr. Dudley as the dean, and I have no doubt he will continue to propel the College of Arts & Sciences into the future as a leader in liberal arts education.”
During his tenure as associate dean, Dudley was instrumental in coordinating efforts related to student success and in developing new programs in the College of Arts & Sciences. He played an important role in the creation of the Department of Sustainability and Environment and its graduate programs and helped establish new majors in sport marketing and media, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, biochemistry and legal studies, as well as numerous new minors and certificates.
