Joseph Cash Memorial Lecture at USD Highlights Tribal Sovereignty
J.R. LaPlante is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. He is a 2009 graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Law, and served as the first Secretary of Tribal Relations for the State of South Dakota. He has also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, and as Tribal Liaison with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the State of South Dakota.
The Joseph Harper Cash Memorial Lecture was inaugurated in 1995, and is named after the late Dr. Joseph Cash, a Bonesteel, S.D., native who served as dean of the University of South Dakota College of Arts & Sciences for 10 years. Cash developed a keen interest in and expertise in American Indian culture, history and issues, and the annual lecture series presents topics related to his interests. The lecture is supported by an endowment established by Cash’s family and friends.
The program, in Farber Hall inside the historic Old Main building, is free and open to the public. The University of South Dakota Department of Psychology is hosting the event, followed by a reception in Old Main.
