Spanning four generations, the Maloney family exemplifies a deep-rooted commitment to USD, demonstrating exceptional dedication, service, and support for the university and its community.

The Maloney legacy began with Paul James Maloney – affectionately known as PJ – who graduated with a law degree (then an LLB) from USD in 1918. A member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity, PJ also made his mark as the sports editor of the Volante and as a quarterback for the Coyote football team, competing against notable teams including Notre Dame, Minnesota and Creighton.

PJ’s legacy continued through his children. Following in his father's footsteps, Dennis Maloney graduated from the USD law school in 1953. Dennis served as the Brown County state’s attorney and made significant contributions to economic development through his role with the Aberdeen Development Corporation. His efforts were recognized in 2005 by then-Gov. Mike Rounds with an Excellence in Economic Development award.

Paul James Maloney Jr. – also known as PJ – graduated in 1959 with a degree in business and industrial management. An active member of the SAE fraternity and a passionate Coyote sports fan, PJ and his wife Kathie were named USD Parents of the Year in 1990. His service extended to the USD Foundation and Athletic Board of Control, and in 2010, he was honored with an induction into the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame.

The next general of Maloney alumni includes PJ’s children: Kyle, Kelly (Gellerman) and Michelle. Attending USD in the late 1980s and early 1990s, they have continued the family tradition of dedication to the university. Their involvement in local businesses and service on various boards underscores their commitment to supporting USD and the Vermillion community.

The Maloney legacy is further enriched by the current generation of grandchildren: Ben (’17, ’24), Katie (’25), and Joey (’25). Growing up immersed in family traditions, such as attending games and participating in Dakota Days parades, they have chosen to continue their education at USD, actively engaging in campus life and forming lifelong connections.

The Maloney family’s enduring connection to USD highlights a remarkable tradition of academic excellence, community service and unwavering support – a shining example of how a family’s commitment can positively impact an institution and it’s community.

USD extends heartfelt congratulations to the Maloney family and looks forward to honoring them at the 2024 Unleash Your Legacy Alumni Achievement Awards. Learn more about the awards, the recipients and the USD Foundation.
