Move-In Day Coyote football game highlight Fast Track Orientation 2008 at The U
Fast Track Orientation 2008 officially begins with Move-In Day when more than 1,600 students and their families check-in at the DakotaDome between the hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30. Students will receive their residence hall room keys, USD welcome packets and instructions that will make the residence hall unloading process more quick and efficient for local and long-distant commuters.
"This new concept of a drive-through, move-in process will be more convenient for our students as well as the volunteers assisting with Move-In Day," explained Jeffrey Baylor, associate vice president of enrollment and student services at USD. "Drivers won’t even have to leave their vehicles as volunteers on site will be available to assist with the unloading process."
Baylor said the efficiency of this procedure eliminates time spent waiting through various stages of what can, ultimately, be a hectic first day of college.
"Students arriving at the dome will be able to check-in, get their room key and have an opportunity to ask any questions before beginning the process of moving into their residence hall," he added.
Chuck Staben, provost and vice president of academic affairs, will address freshmen parents during the Parents Welcome at 2 p.m. in the Wayne S. Knutson Theater, which is in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. The Coyotes’ first home football game of the season against St. Ambrose at 7 p.m. in the DakotaDome will conclude the first day of orientation activities.

In addition to Move-In Day, Fast Track Orientation 2008 features several informational sessions and entertainment opportunities for new students to interact with other students as well as learn more about proper study habits and what to expect during their first year of college. Events scheduled include Fast Track Orientation Kickoff and a lawn party on Sunday; a tour of classes and a Battle of the Floors for Monday; and an Honors orientation, a New Student Convocation and the Coyote Bash on Tuesday.
"These activities afford students an opportunity to meet and hang out with each other, learn more about USD and settle in before classes start on Sept. 3," added Baylor. "We want all of our new students to discover what life at The U is all about."
