According to a Census Bureau report, 11.3% of Sioux Falls residents live in poverty.

The free community forum will address poverty in three sessions.

Jan. 30 – 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Below the Surface: The Depth of Poverty

The session features Matt Gassen from Feeding South Dakota, Suzanne Smith, director of the Augustana Research Institute, and Candy Hanson from Thrive Sioux Falls.

Feb. 6 – 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. On the Surface: The Impact of Poverty on our Community

The session will be led by a panel of Sioux Falls experts, including Jamie Nold, assistant superintendent of Schools in Sioux Falls, Jim Schmidt, Lincoln County commissioner, Kari Benz, director of Minnehaha County Human Services, and others.

Feb. 13 – 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Above the Surface: What Can We Do to Get our Community Out of Poverty?

This discussion will be led by local attorney Kasey Olivier, who will tell her personal story of rising from the grasp of poverty. She’ll be joined by others from the area who found hope and assistance in Sioux Falls.
