On campus residents on the rise at USD as Welcome Week kicks off
“USD will be at 101 percent of our residence hall capacity,” said Kimberly Grieve, dean of students at USD. “Therefore, we found some creative solutions to provide additional living space that mirrors the amenities of other residence hall space.”
USD has space available for 2,207 housing contracts. This year, more than 2,207 contracts were submitted.To accommodate this increase, parts of each of USD’s nine residence halls have been reconfigured to provide more than 100 extra beds.
“With our residence halls exceeding capacity, especially the freshman residence halls, we had to make some changes in order to meet all the requests for accommodations,” noted Jeff Baylor, vice president of marketing, enrollment and student services at USD, who reiterated that despite the exceeded capacity beds will be available for everybody who submitted a housing contract. “We are thrilled to have so many new students and returning students choosing to live on campus.”
After moving in to the residence halls on Saturday, new students will gather at 3:30 p.m. at the North Complex for a processional to the DakotaDome for Convocation, an invitation of membership to the university’s academic community. Grieve, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Chuck Staben, and President James W. Abbott will lead students in the official matriculation statement.
Additional activities on Saturday include the Provost’s Picnic, a reception for parents hosted by the USD Foundation and a Block Party at the DakotaDome parking lot. Other Welcome Week events include Coyotepalooza on Sunday, a Student Organization Fair on Monday, and fraternity and sorority recruitment activities, and movies and games throughout the first week of class.
