Phi Beta Kappa initiation lecture is March 29 at USD
A banquet honoring all new members of Phi Beta Kappa begins at 5:15 p.m. in the Freedom Forum Room of the Neuharth Center, followed by the initiation of new members at 6:30 p.m. in the Law School courtroom. The initiation ceremony includes the presentation of the James M. Doyle Humanities Teaching Award by Emily Haddad, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at 7:15 p.m. in the Beacom School of Business Auditorium.
Following the award presentation, Dr. James P. Collins, Virginia M. Ullman Professor of Natural History and the Environment in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University, will present the Phi Beta Kappa Lifto Amundson Lecture, “One Biology, One Science: A Vision for the 21st Century” in the Law School Court Room, to which the public is invited.
Collins has served both as director of the Population Biology and Physiological Ecology program at the National Science Foundation and as director of the Directorate for Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation. A Bonchek Fellow at Franklin and Marshall College, Collins was awarded with ASU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Distinguished Faculty Award in 2003 and the Gary Krahenbuhl Difference Maker award in 2005.
The Lifto Amundson Lecture was established by Marjorie Lifto Amundson and her son, Dr. Loren Amundson of Sioux Falls. Mrs. Amundson was a member of USD’s Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and Dr. Amundson was also elected to membership in the chapter.
