School of Health Sciences names Larson associate dean
Larson has been the chair of the nursing department since 2000. She joined USD as an instructor in 1980. Earlier this year, Larson’s leadership was highlighted when she was inducted as a fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education. Fellows are recognized for significant contributions to nursing education.
The dean of the School of Health Sciences, Dr. Brian Kaatz, said Larson's experience and skill will be an immense help in achieving the school's goals. "June has made many outstanding contributions to nursing education and the profession," Kaatz said. "She has had a national presence in nursing and The University of South Dakota has greatly benefitted from that."
Larson said she's excited to work with the School of Health Sciences leadership and faculty. "I enjoy creating new opportunities and look forward to helping the school meet the health care needs of the state," she added.
Larson received the Pioneer in Nursing Award from the South Dakota Nurses Association last September. She has served as president of the South Dakota Board of Nursing since November 2005. A photo of Larson is available for download at www.usd.edu/urelations/images/June_Larson.jpg.
A search is underway to fill the position of chairperson of the nursing department.
The School of Health Sciences trains students in critical health care professions. These careers are projected to be among the fastest growing in the next. Programs include alcohol and drug studies, dental hygiene, medical technology, nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant, physical therapy and social work.
