USD’s program was recognized because of its comprehensive health care approach, inclusion of relapse prevention coursework, examination of public policy and the study of case management and assessment of co-occurring disorders. The program’s competitive tuition cost was also noted.

The addiction counseling and prevention department was started at USD in 1973. The department offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as certificates and a minor. Since its inception, the program has conferred more than 1,100 degrees.
