A series of workshops June 5-17 focusing on Native American culture, history and tradition is open to 20 students with an interest in visual arts. All courses are taught by professional artists. Participants attend free of charge, including meals, housing, instruction and art supplies.

Students are selected based upon an online application, letter of recommendation and portfolio of their artwork. Special attention is given to applications from Native American students.

The Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute, sponsored by the art department, honors longtime USD professor and American Indian Northern Plains artist Oscar Howe. The institute aims to help educate the next generation of Native American artists and has supported many students who have gone on to pursue a career in art.
