USD Med School names Associate Dean for Rapid City campus
As associate dean, Simmons’ responsibilities include providing leadership and oversight of all academic, research and public service programs; managing budget and resource allocation; fostering student professionalism and ethical behavior; assisting in the recruitment of teaching faculty; mentoring and development of academic and clinical faculty; representing the campus at external development and fundraising activities; and maintaining an active clinical practice.
“I have been fortunate to work with Dr. Simmons for several years, and his experience and leadership qualities will serve our Rapid City campus very well,” said Dr. Rodney R. Parry, dean of the Sanford School of Medicine and vice president of health affairs at USD. “As a colleague, he is respected greatly and he is very deserving of this opportunity to lead our program and continue serving as an invaluable mentor to students on the Rapid City campus.”
A member of the Sanford School of Medicine faculty since 1992, Simmons currently serves as Neurology Clerkship Director for the Sanford School of Medicine. Previously, Simmons was Neurology Clerkship Coordinator as well as clinical associate professor for 10 years. Prior to joining the faculty at the med school Simmons was chief, department of neurology, Third Air Force Medical Center at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. Last year, he was a recipient of a teacher recognition award for outstanding teaching in neurology by the American Academy of Neurology Section of Neurologic Educators; and in 2009, he was awarded the Anton Hyden Distinguished Professor Award by the Sanford School of Medicine Class of 2009 for being the “professor who helped and inspired most” during the class’ clinical years. He received both his B.S. and M.D. from Creighton University.
