Yuan’s research project titled “The Mechanisms of NMDAR-Dependent Long-Term Potentiation in Nociceptive Synapses,” examines pain pathways with potential alternative approaches to opioid use. Although Yuan began her research while pursuing a Ph.D. at USD in Biomedical Neuroscience, this project was part of the Medical Student Summer Research program. After completing her Ph.D. degree, Yuan entered medical school at USD.

“Sharleen is an excellent researcher who understands the connection between basic biomedical and clinical research,” said Brian Burrell, Yuan’s research advisor at USD’s Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences.

Yuan is a graduate of Stevens High School in Rapid City, South Dakota and expects to graduate from USD’s Sanford School of Medicine in 2018.
