USD students who receive these awards will become AmeriCorps members and focus on meeting critical community needs. Funding will assist students in their efforts to provide education support services in K-12 schools, deliver health care services in medically underserved communities to uninsured/underinsured individuals and assist local nonprofit organizations. During the life of the grant, close to 520 students will receive this scholarship opportunity joining a regional network of students serving through colleges and universities in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

“The USD AmeriCorps program will reward students working in the highest need areas around the region,” stated Chuck Staben, provost and vice president for academic affairs at USD. “It is also an excellent extension of the university’s goal to partner with communities in addressing local challenges.”

AmeriCorps, a national service program administered by the Corporation, engages 80,000 Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs. Its members serve through more than 14,000 nonprofit and faith-based organizations in rural and urban communities. Among other accomplishments, AmeriCorps members last year mobilized 2.6 million community volunteers, and tutored, mentored or served more than 2.5 million disadvantaged youth.
