Residences offer newly graduated physicians the opportunity to focus on training in a specific field of medicine, such as pathology, family medicine, surgery or psychiatry and others. Sponsoring and supporting residencies is a critical aspect of providing skilled physicians to South Dakota.

With the support of all health systems in Sioux Falls, the USD Sanford School of Medicine offers programs to about 140 different medical residents in eight different fields. In its six-decade existence pathology’s residency has contributed 56 residency graduates, 12 of whom are now practicing medicine in South Dakota, and 10 of those physicians are graduates of USD’s Sanford School of Medicine. There are currently seven residents in the pathology residency program. Four of the residents are South Dakota natives, and three are graduates of the USD Sanford School of Medicine.

In addition to overseeing its residency programs, including pathology, the USD Sanford School of Medicine is training 268 medical students in its general medical education program.
