USD Sanford School of Medicines Dr Gary Timmerman Inducted into Academy of Master Surgeon Educators
A Watertown, South Dakota, native, Timmerman attended the USD School of Medicine for two years before graduating from Washington University School of Medicine in 1984. Following residency, he opened a surgical practice in Watertown. He relocated to Sioux Falls in 1998 and began teaching medical students in 2006, and in 2012 he became chair of the medical school’s surgery department. He continues to teach and lead the department.
“Dr. Timmerman is first and foremost an outstanding surgeon who provides skilled, compassionate care for his patients,” said Dr. Tim Ridgway, dean of the medical school. “The school of medicine is fortunate he shares his skills and wisdom with the next generation of physicians, and it is gratifying to see his efforts recognized. His contributions to the department of surgery cannot be overstated.”
This recognition continues Dr. Timmerman’s distinguished history with the American College of Surgeons, the second largest physician organization in the world. In 2014, Timmerman served as chair of the organization’s board of governors and currently serves on its board of regents.
