USD School of Law to Host Free Speech Lecture Sept 18
The lecture is titled “Free Speech and Modernity: One Hundred Years of the First Amendment."
Magarian, a former law clerk for Justice John Paul Stevens of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Louis Oberdorfer of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, is a professor of law at Washington University of Law in St. Louis where he teaches and writes about U.S. constitutional law with an emphasis on freedom of expression.
His research and writing also examine church and state, firearms regulation, and regulations of the media and the political process, and has been published in the Michigan Law Review, the Texas Law Review, the George Washington Law Review and other leading law journals. His first book, "Managed Speech: The Roberts Court’s First Amendment," was published in 2017 by Oxford University Press.
Magarian earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his J.D., and master’s degree in public policy from the University of Michigan. He practiced law at Jenner and Block in Washington, D.C. and taught at Villanova University before joining the Washington University faculty in 2008.
