USD sees increase in on campus students
“With a vibrant campus, excellent teaching and outstanding research laboratories, it’s not surprising that a growing number of students are choosing to attend USD full-time even though it’s stressing our residential housing system a bit,” said James W. Abbott, president of the University of South Dakota. “It’s very gratifying to our campus community that we continue to flourish as students recognize the quality of our faculty and our undergraduate and graduate programs.”
Full-time equivalent (FTE) student enrollment also increased at USD. FTE students are categorized as taking 15 credits or more per semester and are more likely to graduate in four years. USD’s FTE is 7,396 students this fall is an increase from 2012’s total FTE of 7,325, while total enrollment at USD remained nearly steady at 10,235 students.
USD’s incoming freshman class also continues to maintain lofty academic standards with an average ACT assessment score of 23.14, bettering the state composite average of 21.9 and the national composite average of 20.9. This ongoing trend can be attributed to USD’s outstanding Honors Program, which grew by 56 students this fall compared to last year’s record number for the program.
