Emily Niebrugge, a junior from Yankton, S.D., will receive a $1,200 scholarship for the coming fall semester.

Niebrugge is studying Contemporary Media and Journalism and Speech Communications at USD. She is also a recipient of the Al Neuharth Excellence in Journalism Scholarship, one of the premier awards at the university for undergraduates who demonstrate exceptional promise as journalists.

Niebrugge served as managing editor last semester for The Volante, the university’s weekly student newspaper. She has also completed two summer internships at the Yankton Press & Dakotan, and works there as a sportswriter during the school year.

She will receive the award that honors long-time journalist David Kranz, who worked as a reporter, columnist and editor for more than 40 years at newspapers in Minnesota and South Dakota. He retired from the Argus Leader in 2010.

Niebrugge said she was honored to receive the award in the name of a journalist she has such respect for.

“I saw how many lives (Kranz) touched here in South Dakota, and I know that this is the kind of journalist I want to become,” she said.

Argus Leader Media President and Publisher Randell Beck said Niebrugge’s selection honors the legacy Kranz left behind for young journalists.

“David always saw the promise in student journalists. One of his great gifts was mentoring and encouraging young people to join the profession,” Beck said.

The David Kranz — Argus Leader Media Journalism Scholarship is an annual award to be presented to a South Dakota student studying journalism at one of the state’s universities.
