USD Students Win First Place in National Sports Entertainment Competition
This was the eighth consecutive year USD has been invited to compete at the national SEVT Conference and the first time a team has won first place.
“After several years of placing second, the 2021 team was able to bring home a first-place trophy” said Robin Ammon, Ed.D., chair of the Kinesiology and Sport Management (KSM) program. “The team did an amazing job of presenting a concise, professional and thought-provoking response to the case study.”
The team consisted of sport marketing and media majors Sierra Prue and Josephina Wright, sport management majors Olivia Wade and Liz Cordell, and business administration major Moria Duncan. The team members are enrolled in Ammon’s Sports Facility & Event Management course.
“Getting the opportunity to attend and compete at the SEVT Conference was an eye-opening experience to what the sports world has to offer,” Prue said. “Being able to be a part of the first-place team was a wonderful experience, and we worked hard to think outside the box and come up with a presentation that was different.”
In the case study competition, teams compiled a 15-minute oral presentation to a panel of expert academic and industry judges. The case study for this year’s competition was titled “One Nation, Two Teams: Repositioning the Toronto Blue Jays Among the Threat of a New Entrant.”
In addition to the competition, the SEVT Conference brought together sport and entertainment industry leaders, students, and teachers to discuss and analyze sport, entertainment and venue industries.
Ammon said that the conference was a great opportunity for students to gain real-world experience outside of the classroom.
“While academics are definitely our students’ top priority, outside university experiences provide rich rewards and leadership opportunities,” Ammon said. “The SEVT Conference is an amazing event that not only provides an opportunity to listen to current industry experts, but it also allows our students to increase their networking opportunities.”
