USD Theatre Streams a Musical on Demand
“It was a work in progress as we were working on sets, lights, costumes, sound and camera angles,” said Raimondo Genna, the show’s producer and the Department of Theatre chair. “Although not the fully realized production, we wanted to share the work of all of our talented artists who put so much into the show. We hope you enjoy the show.”
This delightful romp is full of laughs, romance—and, of course, killing. When the young and struggling Monty discovers that he is ninth in line to an earldom, he starts plotting how he can bump off the preceding eight relatives.
Playing the role of Monty is Tyler Wilson, junior BFA musical theatre major. “The process of building this show has been some of the most fun I've ever had on-stage, and I know the audience will have a great time with us,” said Wilson.
This show employs social distancing in staging and incorporates face shields for the actors. In spite of the challenges of implementing these practices, the director, Matt Nesmith, and choreographer, Patricia Downey, have creatively staged the show to retain its full physical humor and allow for the actors to bring the beautiful and hysterical songs brilliantly to life.
Mariah Seeley, junior BFA musical theatre major, takes on the ingenue role of Phoebe. “The process of putting together such a killer show has been so exciting and so much fun. I’ve enjoyed every moment of bringing the lovely Phoebe D’Ysquith to life and having the opportunity to create such comedic live theatre with this incredible cast and crew,” Seeley said.
LD Dowell, senior BFA theatre studies major, takes on the pivotal job of stage managing this fast-paced production. “I see the job of a stage manager to inspire the cast, so they can inspire others. It’s so fun to see the actors and production team grow and make this musical come to life, and I love being a part of that,” said Dowell.
