Professor Nicole Etcheson of Ball State University will present the plenary lecture, “First African Americans, Then Women, Children, and Idiots: The Fifteenth and Nineteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution” at 12:30 p.m. in the Muenster University Center East Ballroom.

The conference is sponsored by the USD Department of History and the Zeta Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society in history. This event takes place in the Muenster University Center and is free and open to the public.

Etcheson’s book, "A Generation at War: The Civil War Era in a Northern Community (2011)," won the 2012 Avery O. Craven Award from the Organization of American Historians for most original book on the Civil War era and the 2012 Best Nonfiction Book of Indiana from the Indiana Center for the Book, Indiana State Library.

In addition to her books, Etcheson is also the author of numerous articles in professional journals as well as a frequent presenter at historical conferences. She is a member of the American Historical Association, Kansas State Historical Society, Organization of American Historians, Society for Historians of the Early American Republic, Southern Historical Association and the Indiana Historical Society.
