USD to Host Truman Scholars' Panel Moderated by Clifton Truman Daniel
The moderator for this event will be Clifton Truman Daniel, board secretary of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation and grandson of the 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman.
Featured Truman Scholars from USD are Clarissa Barnes, M.D., a 2003 Truman scholar; Ed Gerrish, Ph.D., a 2004 Truman scholar; Heather Fluit, a 2009 Truman scholar; Josh Sorbe, a 2019 Truman scholar; and Caleb Weiland, a 2023 Truman scholar.
The Truman Scholarship is the nation’s premier graduate scholarship for students pursuing education and careers in the public service sector.
A federal memorial to President Truman, the scholarship rewards aspiring public servants in their junior year who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the public and their community and exhibit outstanding leadership potential.
Since 1986, 20 USD students have been named Truman Scholars, with numerous other finalists throughout the university’s history.
The most recent Coyote recipients came in 2023, when two students from USD were awarded the illustrious scholarship. In 2024, USD had yet another finalist in the running — the only student from either South or North Dakota to reach the penultimate stage of the application process.
Following the public panel, a reception will be held at Cee Cee’s 605 Scratch Kitchen in downtown Vermillion from 5:30-7 p.m.
Sponsors of the event include USD’s College of Arts & Sciences and the Office of Academic Affairs.
All members of the public and USD community are invited to attend the panel discussion and reception to learn more about this prestigious program, the Coyotes who have received the scholarship and the future of public service through the eyes of USD and beyond.
