Mettler becomes USD’s first honoree of the award in the Coyotes’ second year as a Summit League member. He has a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA) as a kinesiology and sports science major with a minor in Spanish. He is currently serving a summer internship at CATZ Sports Performance Center in Pasadena, Calif.

“It is exciting to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year,” said Mettler. “I place a strong emphasis on both my athletics and my academics and to be recognized in this way is incredibly rewarding.”

A native of Eureka, S.D., Mettler is a three-season star at South Dakota. He placed second at the league’s cross country championship in the fall, was named the league’s Indoor Track Championship MVP while leading his team to a Summit League championship in the winter, and was a steeplechase champion and NCAA West Region qualifier in the spring.

Mettler, who was named USD Athlete of the Year in late April, was recently named Capital One Academic All-District by CoSIDA and earned Academic All-League honors in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. In addition to his work on the track and in the classroom, Mettler serves as president of USD’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and has volunteered with the community engagement group SERVE.

Fort Wayne junior basketball player Amanda Hyde was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year on the women’s side. Hyde was named The Summit League Player of the Year after averaging a league-best 18.6 points per game. She also maintains a 4.0 GPA as a math and math teaching major with a minor in psychology.
