The (Re)Cognition Emerging Leader Award honors students who demonstrate innovative and creative leadership in addressing sustainability issues on campus and re-think and re-imagine what is possible, according to the association.

As the campus recycling coordinator for the past two years, Moore leads the team of students who collect recycling from campus buildings and acts as an intermediary between the team and the wider USD campus to improve recycling. She also serves on the USD President’s Committee on Sustainability.

Moore said she felt honored to be recognized by the association, which encourages and facilitates the sharing of information and resources on campus sustainability with its member institutions from Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

“It feels like a celebration of all the collaborative work I've been part of—the productive projects and the network of people involved in the process,” Moore said. “It is an honor to be recognized by UMACS, and it’s wonderful to have this chance to reflect and thank everyone who makes my life and education in Vermillion rich.”

Professor of Sustainability & Environment Mark Sweeney, Ph.D., nominated Moore for the award.

“Anna's contributions to campus sustainability are exceptional,” Sweeney said. “On recycling, she has been responsible for expanding recycling to all buildings on campus, and, more specifically, in residence halls.”

Sweeney also lauded Moore’s work on reducing waste and promoting sustainable products and packaging through the university purchasing process and campus dining services.

“While there are many players to improve sustainability on this campus, it is not unreasonable to conclude that Anna has had a significant role in nearly every sustainability decision on campus over the last two years, either through her direct efforts or by her encouragement of others to propose or make change,” Sweeney said.
