Scheduling: Contestants will be notified of audition times after January 18, 2026

 

Competition Divisions & Eligibility

  • Junior Division: Grades 7–8
  • Intermediate Division: Grades 9–10
  • Senior Division: Grades 11–12

 

Repertoire Requirements:

Prepare two or three works, performed from memory. The repertoire selections must be from at least two of the following compositional periods listed below.

  • Baroque Romantic
  • Classical
  • Romantic
  • Impressionistic/Contemporary

Maximum playing time is 15 minutes; there is no minimum time limit. Programmed music may exceed maximum time limit; performance will be stopped when maximum time limit is reached (does not affect results). Student chooses first selection, and the adjudicator determines the rest of the order. Only solo piano compositions—no concertos, please. No transcriptions, arrangements or pop music allowed. Cuts in the music are not permitted. Repeats are left to the discretion of the performer. One copy of the music must be provided for the adjudicator. No photocopies are allowed.

  • 1st Place: $250
  • 2nd Place winner: $150
  • 3rd Place winner: $50
  • Honorable Mention: Certificate

The winners will be announced following the completion of each division. The jury this year is guest adjudicator, Dr. Kevin Chance (Associate Professor of Piano at the University of Alabama; President of MTNA).

* Prize processing: All winners must complete a W-9 on the day of the competition. Checks are mailed by the University of South Dakota Foundation after the event.

Masterclass with Dr. Kevin Chance

USD Piano Scholarships

12th-grade contestants planning to attend the University of South Dakota may be considered for Truran Piano Scholarships (in addition to cash prizes). Please indicate your interest on the application form.

 

Visit the National Music Museum

We invite you to visit the National Music Museum while you are on the USD campus for the competition. Complimentary admission will be provided for all contestants and their family members
