Natatorium
The Wellness Center Natatorium is designed to serve both the campus community and the Vermillion community at large; with facilities that can host everything from public swim classes to large swim competitions, the addition creates many new opportunities in water fitness and wellness for all age groups.

Group Swim Lessons
The USD Wellness Center staff are committed to offering quality swimming lessons and are compliant with the American Red Cross Swim Lessons standards. Group lessons are limited to a 4:1 instructor to participant ratio which allows the staff to meet the needs of all participants.
- Members $40 + tax
- Non-members $50 + tax
Note: When registering online, only those with a family membership will automatically receive the discount. If you have a single, couple or student membership, you must contact the office to get a promotional code to use when registering online.
Private Youth Swim Lessons
Our private swimming lessons are taught by certified water safety instructor staff. Private lessons are 30 minutes long and provide one-on-one swimming instruction./p>
- Private Lesson Rates: $85
- Note: We also offer the option to sign a second swimmer up for a co-private lesson at a 2:1 ratio for an additional $35. Please only use this option for two swimmers at the same skill level (or no more than one Red Cross level apart)

Adult Swim Lessons
The Wellness Center also offers private swim lessons for adults! Whether you would like to learn the basics, improve skills and strokes, or learn to swim for fitness, our certified instructors can help. Please reach out to [email protected] to inquire about swim lessons for adults.
If you are searching for summer employment or for a job at our Natatorium as a certified lifeguard or swim instructor, look to the Wellness Center to help you get certified.
Lifeguard Certification
Prior to the start date of the course, students will meet to complete the pre-requisite swim skills assessment.
Lifeguard Certification Prerequisite Swimming Skills
- Swim/Tread/Swim: Swim 150 yards continuously demonstrating breath control & rhythmic breathing, tread water for two minutes using only the legs, then swim 50 yards continuously.
- Timed Event: Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10lb brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to starting point with the brick, exit the water using the ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds (no goggles allowed).
If it is determined that you do not have the necessary swimming ability to pass this course, you will not receive the lifeguard certification and will receive a partial refund.

Lifeguard Certification Renewal:
Register for this course to renew your lifeguard certification. You must have a current (or expired by less than 30 days) American Red Cross lifeguarding certificate.
Water Safety Instructor Certification
If you are interested in teaching others to swim and are at least 16 years of age, consider our American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course. Participants of this course will get hands-on instruction of teaching Red Cross Swim Lesson materials and will receive a two-year certification after completing a pre-requisite skills assessment, all course requirements, and passing a final written examination with a score of 80% or higher.
WSI Prerequisite Swimming Skills:
- Back float for 1 minute
- Tread water for 1 minute
- Swim the front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke for 50 yards each, and the butterfly for 10 yards.

NinjaCross:
An exciting feature of the Natatorium is our NinjaCross, a fully customizable obstacle course that can be raised or lowered from the ceiling in under 60 seconds. This obstacle course will create three-dimensional challenges for swimmers and exercisers of all ages and any fitness level.
NinjaCross rules:
- Participants MUST be a minimum of 48-inches tall
- Maximum weight for each participant is 275 lbs
- Use only under supervision of lifeguard or attendant
- Always follow the directions of staff members
- Participants must start the obstacle course in the water, not on the pool deck
- Diving, jumping, running, pushing, etc. is strictly prohibited
- Participants use system solely at their own risk, and assume all risk of injury due to misuse of the Ninja Cross or failure to follow rules
- Climbing obstacle cables, structure column legs, or any other components on the system is strictly prohibited
- Touching obstacle frames, electronics, or any other components other than the obstacles is strictly prohibited
- Only use if you are capable of safely swimming the length of the pool and can hold your breath underwater for 10 seconds or more
- Non swimmers are not permitted
- Only 1 participant may be on an obstacle at a time
- Swinging, leaping, jumping, or swimming into an adjacent lane is strictly prohibited
- If you fail on an obstacle, move onto the next obstacle and attempt to complete
- If you feel exhausted or weak, stop participation and swim out of the lane to the closest pool wall
- Do not push, shove or harass other guests
- No diving allowed anywhere in this section
- Leave the pool promptly after completing the course or if you are unable to complete the course
Hot Tub:
Our hot tub accommodates 25 people and supports a range of positive outcomes, with possible benefits including stress and muscle relief, lower blood pressure and improved sleep.
Hot Tub rules:
- You must be at least 5 years of age to enter the hot tub
- Shower thoroughly before using the spa area and refrain from washing, shaving or using oils and lotions in these areas
- Wear family appropriate and clean swim attire only. No street shoes
- No phone conversations, electronic or recording devices, food or glass containers in the spa areas
- Persons between the ages of 5 and 15 years must be accompanied by a parent/guardian
- Do not exercise in the spa area. Cool down at least five minutes after exercising prior to use.
- Observe a reasonable time limit in the hot tub. Excessive exposure may result in nausea, dizziness, or fainting. Please limit usage to 10 minutes
- Use the hot tub only when a lifeguard is present
- Persons who are pregnant or who have medical conditions should not enter the spa area without prior consultation and permission from their physician
- Persons under the influence of alcohol, tranquilizers or any drugs that cause drowsiness or raise/lower blood pressure should not enter spa area
- No glass or breakable objects are permitted
Steam Room:
The steam room offers a relaxing experience that can improve circulation, clear congestion, promote skin health, aid in workout recovery and boost your immune system.
Steam Room Rules
- You must be 16 years of age to enter the steam room
- Excessive exposure may result in nausea, dizziness, and/or fainting. Please limit usage to 15 minutes
- Swimwear is required.
- Persons who are pregnant or have health conditions should consult a physician before using
- No glass or breakable objects are permitted
- Cell phones are prohibited in the steam room
- Please shower after use if you plan to enter the pool
- For your protection, exercising is not permitted in the steam room
- Personal hygiene activities (shaving, hair-cutting, etc.) are never permitted
- Respect the shared space, keep talking to a minimum
Parts of the Natatorium will be available to reserve for events such as birthday parties and club and organization events. Please note that we will not be able to reserve the entirety of the facility but we will block off reserved areas to indicate that these areas are for special events. The following areas are able to be reserved:
- Recreation Pool – maximum participants 25 - $75/hour
- Recreation Pool & Ninja Cross - maximum participants 25 - $100/hour
* The Multipurpose room will be included with all reservations contingent on availability.
