College of Arts & Sciences to Host Pillars of Distinction Awards Night and Hall of Fame
 
							The Pillars of Distinction Awards Night and Hall of Fame will honor and recognize those who have paved the way for the future of the College of Arts & Sciences. These exceptional members uphold USD’s efforts to offer a world-class education in the liberal arts and sciences, to create and disseminate knowledge and to serve the people of South Dakota, the nation and the world.
“This recognition of our outstanding alumni and friends is long overdue. In Arts & Sciences, we like to think of ourselves as the academic foundation of the university, and our graduates are embedded in all walks of life,” said John Dudley, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. “The common thread that unites them is the liberal arts education that the college has always provided. We need to acknowledge and celebrate the people who exemplify that great tradition.”
The Pillars of Distinction recipients include the following:
- Lorraine Hart ’73 - Pillar of Service Award
- Mark Fisher, M.D. ’72, ’73 - Pillar of Discovery Award
- Larry Pressler ’64 - Pillar of Leadership Award
- A. Truman Schwartz, Ph.D. ’56 - Pillar of Enlightenment Award
Hall of Fame recipients, who are being recognized posthumously, include the following:

The College of Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame will be permanently displayed on campus to recognize the recipients’ contributions to the college and university.
The Award ceremony will also include the announcement of the recipient of the first annual Dr. Michael P. Roche Distinguished Teaching Award. This award, presented to a current faculty member in the College of Arts & Sciences, honors the rich legacy of Professor Emeritus Michael P. Roche, S.J.P., who consistently encouraged generations of students to broaden their perspectives, explore their passions and envision their unique contributions to the world, all while affirming his belief in their potential.
