As secretary of the Senate, Barber will oversee a comprehensive array of offices and services critical to the daily operations of the U.S. Senate. Her responsibilities will include maintaining the legislative records of the Senate, such as minutes of proceedings, calendars of business, debates, nominations, bills and amendments.

Barber, a native of Onida, South Dakota, received her Juris Doctor from the USD Knudson School of Law in 2006. Since then, she has built an impressive career in public service. Most recently, she has served as the staff director for the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, a role she has held since July 2023. Barber has also served as chief counsel for the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition & Forestry and the House Agriculture Committee.

Barber's extensive experience and dedication to public service have been recognized by key figures in the Senate. Sen. John Thune, who announced Barber’s appointment, described her as an "immensely qualified professional" who will be crucial to the Senate's functioning on a day-to-day basis.

“Jackie Barber's appointment as secretary of the Senate is a testament to her hard work, ability and dedication to the law and public service,” said USD Knudson School of Law Dean Neil Fulton. “I am certain that she'll significantly contribute in her new capacity with the same commitment to excellence, service and leadership that she has demonstrated throughout her exceptional career.”
