The Cutler Award was established by the Cutler family of the Cutler Law Firm in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

“The engagement and support I receive from the law school community, particularly the students, is the key ingredient for my work,” said Miller. “I also appreciate the warm welcome I have received from the South Dakota legal community since joining the faculty two years ago.”

Miller, who has been with the Knudson School of Law since 2022, specializes in debtor-creditor rights and secured transactions. He teaches the bankruptcy practicum and is a champion of student mentorship.

A prolific legal scholar, Miller’s academic contributions include a scholarly article, a book review and two upcoming publications in the Drexel Law Review and the Florida State Business Journal.

He has represented USD Knudson School of Law at various speaking engagements nationwide, including the American Bankruptcy Institute, Midwestern Bankruptcy Institute, the 21st Biennial Judge Joe Lee Bankruptcy Institute and the American Bar Association Business Section Spring Meeting. Miller has also presented research at several conferences and symposiums. His insights have been sought by Prairie Business Magazine and he has been quoted by Bloomberg Law, Law360 and the National Law Journal in the past year.

Miller holds leadership roles in the American Bar Association, serving as the co-chair of the Bankruptcy Study and Policy Subcommittee and the vice-chair of the Current Developments Taskforce for the Business Bankruptcy Committee.

“Professor Miller is a rising star in the area of debtor/creditor law and brings an excellent balance of theoretical rigor and practical experience,” said Knudson School of Law Dean Neil Fulton, J.D. “I am excited to honor him with this award. I also deeply appreciate the ongoing investment of the Cutler Family and Cutler Law Firm in the law school and the excellent faculty who are here. Investments like theirs are a great example of how we can all take a role in shaping the future of the law in South Dakota and beyond.”
