“I feel honored that I have been given this opportunity,” said Willman, who will begin her training in November. “I absolutely love to learn, and this course will challenge me to do my best to gain everything I can. My goal is not only to educate, but to engage faculty and students, empower them to be the best they can be and learn effectively and efficiently, and overall inspire them to become the next generation of professionals practicing humanistic medicine.”

The program, a six-month, online certificate program designed for clinician-educators around the world, blends traditional and modern teaching approaches through interactive online modules, skills-based training, team and individual projects, live virtual workshops and a final capstone project designed to benefit the participant’s home institution. The rigorous curriculum empowers participants to apply educational theory and best practices to train medical students and physicians-in-training, ultimately strengthening the quality and impact of the future medical workforce.

In addition to her role as associate dean, Willman also teaches throughout the medical curriculum and practices pediatrics at the Yankton Medical Clinic.

“I believe that effective medical teaching extends beyond the transfer of knowledge,” Willman explained. “Mentorship, role modeling and fostering a culture of curiosity, integrity and lifelong learning are just as important. I am committed to actively engaging in this training and collaborating with peers and mentors to grow as a medical educator. Ultimately, I hope to translate the insights gained into impactful teaching that supports students not only in mastering complex content, but also in becoming empathetic, ethical, kind and competent physicians.”
