The USD Sanford School of Medicine is a member of the AAMC, a nonprofit association dedicated to transforming health through medical education, clinical care, biomedical research and community collaborations.

“I am honored to represent the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, our excellent health systems and the state of South Dakota on this distinguished board,” said Dr. Ridgway. “I strive to be an influential voice for public community-based medical schools and our important mission dedicated to rural health care.”

Dr. Ridgway will begin his one-year term on the Council of Deans Administrative Board in November 2026.

The COD convenes deans of AAMC member medical schools in the U.S. and Canada to address issues affecting academic medicine and develop strategies to achieve excellence in medical education, research and patient care. The COD addresses policies guiding the AAMC in its service and advocacy functions, programs for the advancement of institutional management and support for the deans' leadership role in guiding individual schools.

Dr. Ridgway received his Bachelor of Arts from Augustana University and Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine.

He is a Fellow of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, a Master of the American College of Physicians and has been the recipient of numerous awards. Dr. Ridgway has practiced gastroenterology with a focus on therapeutic endoscopy for 35 years and has been a faculty member of the USD Sanford School of Medicine since 1997.

The AAMC’s members consist of 163 U.S. medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education; 13 Canadian medical schools accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools; nearly 500 academic health systems and teaching hospitals, including Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers; and more than 70 academic societies.
