The annual symposium, which focuses on leveraging research, knowledge and insight on substance use from across the country, was held virtually on Nov. 7-9.

Both students shared their research through poster presentations. Van Buskirk presented her research titled, “Literary Review and Analysis of Opioid Epidemic in SD and US,” and Nahian presented his research titled, “Substance Use Disorders in the Great Plains: Exploring Changes during the Pandemic.”

Both Van Buskirk and Nahian completed their research through SPURA, a multi-disciplinary summer research program providing undergraduate students the opportunity to work with a faculty mentor on a dedicated research project in the area of substance use disorder or mental health.

Van Buskirk is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing at USD and Nahian is working toward a doctorate degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
