Educators Rising is a national movement dedicated to inspiring and preparing the next generation of educators. Through partnerships among school districts, state leaders and higher education institutions, students gain opportunities to explore the teaching profession while building leadership skills and professional connections.

Throughout the day, students connected with USD faculty, current education students, practicing educators and fellow Educators Rising members. The event emphasized community, belonging and leadership while encouraging participants to explore the many pathways available within the field of education.

“The energy throughout the day was incredible,” said Melissa Griese, academic recruiter in the USD School of Education. “One of our goals was to help students see that there isn't just one path to becoming an educator. Every person in the room had a unique story, and we wanted students to leave knowing they can create their own.”

Sharing a unique story was former USD student Abbie Wiebers, Ed.S. ’22, B.S.Ed. ’18, who served as the keynote speaker. She told of her journey from high school student to education professional, encouraging attendees to embrace growth opportunities and recognize the difference educators can make in the lives of others.

After the keynote, students participated in two of seven interactive breakout sessions focused on topics like student teaching, educational technology, special education, study abroad opportunities, careers in education and movement in the classroom.

The hands-on format of the sessions was especially well received, with one teacher leader praising the special education session, noting that students were actively engaged throughout the experience. “When the kids are up and doing things and walk away with something they make or do, those experiences tend to be the most memorable,” they shared.

Teacher leaders also highlighted the value of the advising sessions, which helped students better understand college pathways and future career opportunities.

“The advising session was a great way to show students what's ahead in college,” one teacher leader said. “I know my students learned a lot from the elementary and special education session.”

Attendees also gained insight into the newly established collegiate Educators Rising Chapter at USD—highlighting how the leadership, community and professional growth opportunities they experienced in high school can continue at the university level.

As the event concluded, students left campus with new connections, fresh perspectives and a greater understanding of how they can make a difference through education.
