USD School of Education Awards Five Individuals with the Legends of Delzell Award

This special event brings together current and former faculty, staff and students to reconnect, share stories and celebrate those who have contributed to the School of Education’s legacy. The 2024 recipients were awarded in October during Destination Delzell at Dakota Days.
The faculty awardee was the late Jeri Engelking, Ph.D., professor emeritus. Engelking was an advocate and mentor for teachers at both PK-12 and university levels. He was a passionate and effective leader, having served as both associate dean and interim dean of the School of Education. He is known for being innovative and an early advocate for technology and online instruction. Those who knew him called him a generous human being, available to family, friends, students, staff and fellow faculty.
Three staff members were awarded the Legends of Delzell, Professional Staff award.
Carmen Stewart, the late director of Head Start, was a dedicated advocate for young children and their families, earning recognition for her tireless efforts. Known for her strong communication skills and commitment to cooperation, she played active leadership roles in various local, regional and state organizations focused on early childhood education. Her achievements included receiving the Susan Smith and South Dakota National Association for the Education of Young Children (SD NAEYC) awards, highlighting her impact on the field.
Anita Kephart, a dedicated member of the School of Education, was recognized for her student-oriented approach and exceptional mentorship of new students. Known for her patience and empathy, she skillfully balanced institutional requirements with student needs, fostering positive partnerships across administrative and faculty lines to enhance operations. A strong supporter of USD, Anita actively engaged in campus activities, including recruiting visits and sporting events, further demonstrating her commitment to the community.
Donna Tucker was recognized for her exemplary service to students, district partners and state certification regulators. A passionate advocate for education, she provided valuable insights on job opportunities and teacher certification requirements in South Dakota and beyond, leveraging her strong network to benefit teachers and districts. As a trusted mentor, Tucker demonstrated genuine concern for USD students, enhancing their career prospects and success.
The first Legend of Delzell Alumni Award was given to the late Carolyn Rants, Ed.D. Rants was recognized for her exemplary service to students, district partners and state certification regulators. A passionate advocate for education, she provided invaluable insights on job opportunities and teacher certification requirements in South Dakota and nationwide, utilizing her extensive network to benefit teachers and districts. As a trusted mentor, Rants demonstrated a genuine concern for USD students, supporting their career development and success.
